Kaikōura Tiny Wee Libraries

Kaikōura's first Tiny Wee Library has been delivered to a local artist, Mary Ashwell, for decorating! It really is all coming together now and it is so exciting to have this project begin to become a reality after it was first discussed back in August when Te Hā o Mātauranga - Learning in Kaikōura hosted an Inspiring Communities Workshop.

The idea for this project began in February 2017 when my family and I discovered a series of little libraries in and around Dunedin while travelling in our bus. These Lilliput Libraries made it easy for us to continue our family's love of reading while on the road and without having to spend loads of money. I couldn't get the idea out of my head or the fact that it was such a great way to encourage reading and increase accessibility to literature within a community. When we arrived in Kaikōura for my husband's work I was still thinking of how I could share this idea or create more libraries when I was invited to the Inspiring Communities Workshop which was the spring-board to get this idea from my head and into the hands of Kaikōura's community.
Since that meeting we have had so much support that my head still spins with how amazing this community is. An enthusiastic group has now taken ownership, funding has been provided (thanks to Te Hā o Mātauranga - Learning in Kaikōura), the first group of libraries have been made and primed (thanks to Peter Fey and Jamie at the Community Shed), we have 3 artists ready to paint and one community group planning their creation along with new FaceBook page so that we can share everything that is happening. Our plan is to create an Arts Trail with the Tiny Wee Libraries so that locals, tourists and visitors alike can experience a variety of Kaikōura's fantastic locations, personalities and places.
It will be an exciting time ahead and I can't wait to see how this project grows and thrives over the coming years. If you'd like to be part of our community project then please contact us. We need enthusiastic people willing to help build, prime, promote, decorate, host and stock our Tiny Wee Libraries.
